The Runaway Bride
(thanx for sending me the poster!)June,15th 99

You want Spoilers and comments for this movie. I have it all from the beginning till the end. So, if you don't like suprise then read below:

"The plot is your typical romantic comedy stuff, but it works. Ike (Richard Gere) is a newspaper column writer who is hated by all the women in the city because of his sexist remarks. One day while in a bar looking for inspiration he bumps into a guy who's been the bride's third dumped at the alter former fiancé. The guy tells Ike he should write about this woman named Maggie (Roberts), his 'black widow spider'. Ike writes the piece without double checking the guy's story and exaggerates how many men she left at the alter. Meanwhile, Maggie's apparently a frequent reader of his column and after reading the article writes to the paper and gets Ike fired. He then finds out that she's walking up the aisle for the fourth time and decides to go to her hometown and follow her around until the wedding day, with the hope that she will run yet again and he can prove his story was correct., albeit a little bit off. Of course, they meet, they fight and argue and squabble, and end up falling for each other. But still, it's quite an enjoyable ride.

"You can guess how the movie runs, I'm sure. They squabble at first, and Ike makes Maggie see she keeps saying yes to wedding proposals because she has low self-esteem and doesn't really 'know herself'. Pretty soon after he starts falling for her, she starts falling for him, and of course, they end up together.

"They passed around the sheet after the movie and we had to select our favorite scene and I couldn't remember any particular scene that I loved. I can barely remember the movie. :) Well, Ike gets his hair dyed in wacky colors, but that's not really that funny. Maggie's fiancé uses sports analogies for everything to make him funny. 'You know what you gotta do, you gotta make eye contact, be the ball...' and that sort of stuff.

"Richard and Julia were both immensely likable. Richard almost made me forget Red Corner. I tend to always like Julia, at least her comedic stuff. This is as good as My Best Friend's Wedding and better than Conspiracy Theory, but worse than in Notting Hill, that is, judging from the trailer which I really like. No member of the supporting cast quite steals the show but the sports-obsessed fiancé steals many of the scenes he's in. Everyone else is just fine, but not spectacular. I wonder why Rita Wilson keeps taking small roles and cameos (like in Psycho '98) "Everything looked slick and pretty, moved along at a nice pace, although ... and this is spoiler stuff... Ike asks her to marry him, she agrees and the whole media shows up to report on the wedding but she ends up running out again. I thought, as I was watching and as the movie went on another 15 minutes after that, they should've just had Maggie marry Ike there, and end then and there...... but the ending they went with, her going back to him and asking forgiveness and stuff ended up being pretty good, so no prob. And she proposed to him in a cute way, which is a plus. Of course, it was pretty predictable what she was gonna say, but that's not important."

This is definitely gonna be a major hit. Notting Hill was good, and I think this one will do equally same if not better. Julia Roberts will steal the show from everyone as she always does.
